The south of Ireland is a region that boasts a blend of cultural cities and endless scenic beauty. The rugged landscape of the south can only truly be enjoyed to its full extent by renting a car as a lot of the outlying areas are largely inaccessible through public transport.
Waterford is situated in what is called the sunny south east. Waterford City was the first city ever established in Ireland and is home to a vast amount of history, ranging from its Viking beginnings right through the medieval era. The city is also home to the famous Waterford Crystal brand whose work is showcased throughout the world. The surrounding countryside provides plenty of scenic views from sprawling hills to majestic mountains as well as a beautiful coastline to match.
County Cork is home to a culturally rich city that has a lot to offer visitors through a long schedule of performing arts and arguably the best culinary scene in the country. The outlying countryside is home to a host of attractions including the famous Blarney Castle where you’ll find the Blarney Stone, it’s said that all who kiss this stone will be granted the gift of eloquence. The coastal region offers more beautiful views as well as a multitude of water based activities. Bantry bay is the perfect location to experience County Cork's beautiful landscapes and culture by rental car.
The city of Limerick is located north of County Cork and very close to Shannon Airport. Here you’ll find a city that exudes a historic atmosphere as you wander through the narrow streets overlooked by architecture ranging back to medieval times. Attractions in the city are based around the history of the city including multipole cathedrals, King John’s Castle, and a couple of fascinating museums.
County Kerry is a land chock full of scenic splendour. The grassy hills and rocky cliffs will match the amazing images of Ireland that many will have seen in the advertising world. Killarney National Park is your best bet to experience the utter beauty on offer, this park consists of tranquil lakes, dense forestry, beautiful grasslands and multiple historic attractions. The Ring of Kerry is a popular driving route that will bring you along the Kerry coastline and is a visual delight for anyone who travels it – majestic mountains, beautiful panoramas, ancient sites, and little out-of-the-way towns can be visited along its route.
The Wild Atlantic Way, the world’s longest defined coastal route, starts off in County Cork and travels along the majestic coastline of the west all the way to the heights of Donegal.
